Elena Dementieva of Russia defeated Serena Williams of USA in her quarterfinal match at the Beijing Olympics.
Dementieva, who won a Silver in Sydney in 2000, beat Williams 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in their singles match Thursday night.
The fourth-seeded Serena tried to rally from a 5-0 deficit in the final set against the No. 5-seeded Dementieva.
Serena Williams seeded number four, had won doubles gold with her sister Venus at the Sydney Games.
Elena Dementieva, will now play either unseeded Austrian Sybille Bammer or her ninth seeded compatriot Vera Zvonareva for a place in the final.
