35 year-old French mid-fielder Claude Makelele has called it a day. He ended his international career after France go defeated against Italy 0-2 on Tuesday (17th June 2008).
Claude Makelele has played 71 matches for France. "I got an enormous amount of pleasure from wearing this jersey," Makelele said.
Makelele, who plays for Chelsea, made his debut for France in a friendly match against Norway in 1995. He represented France in Euro 2004 and 2008 and also in 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
36 year-old Lilian Thuram also retired from international soccer after their Tuesday's defeat against Italy. Thuram played 142 times for France. The Barcelona defender won the World Cup in 1998.
