26-year-old rugby player Iafeta Paleaaesina who playes for Wigan Warriors, broke the jaw of a drunken fan James Campbell, a bus driver.
Liverpool Crown Court has ordered Iafeta Paleaaesina to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £1,000 compensation.
Neville Biddle, for the prosecution, said that the defendant struck Mr Campbell in the face and knocked him to the ground after he began making disparaging and abusive remarks to the players. He was clearly drunk.
Paul Becker, for the defence, said: “The defendant accepts he acted improperly and is extremely sorry for what he did.”
